Cyber Strong Schools

The Child Health Promotion Research Centre (CHPRC) received funding from the Public Education Endowment Trust (PEET) to conduct a research project that will help to develop sustainable approaches to build the capacity of school staff in supporting students to function safely and positively as digital citizens.

Consultations with key stakeholders, students and staff informed the development of a capacity building framework and identification of the essential components necessary to include within a resource addressing Social Networking. These findings have been categorised into the five learning modules contained within this Cyber Strong Schools website.

Developing Personal Knowledge

This module provides background information to develop the knowledge and competencies of school staff around their personal use of social networking. This content was identified by stakeholders, students and staff as needed by staff when interacting informally and formally with young people using social networking.

Whole School Policy

This module outlines guidelines provided by Department of Education WA (DOEWA), Catholic Education Office WA (CEOWA) and Association of Independent Schools WA (AISWA) on the use of online services in schools, examples of school policies on social networking, legal issues relating to policies against cyberbullying and realistic scenarios.

Professional Conduct

This module addresses issues relating to school staff’s use of social networking providing a guide to online professionalism, with reference to professional teaching standards.

Teaching and Learning

This module provides background information to develop an understanding of students’ use of social networking. Research on the use of social networking by young people can also be found in this module supported by video clips of young people discussing their online use.

Student Cyber Leaders

This resource is a student leadership package aimed at skilling young people to become leaders in their school to reduce cyberbullying and other cyber related harms. This resource is also supplemented with guidelines for school staff to encourage and support student leaders and school stories to provide practical based suggestions for implementation.
